John 17

The true Gospel is not merely a message, it is centered on a Person. While the Synoptic Gospels present the message of the good news, the Gospel of John reveals to us the Person of the Gospel, the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. In John 17, we see Jesus’ supreme desire: that the Father be glorified through Him. The true Gospel, therefore, always glorifies the name of Jesus alone.

According to Romans 1:16, the Gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes. It is not mere information, but divine power at work in human lives. If we desire breakthrough, growth, and victory, we must grow in faith, because the Gospel operates in the lives of those who truly believe.

Let us reflect on five remarkable aspects of the true Gospel.

1. The Gospel has power to change life

A clear example is found in the life of Zacchaeus in Luke 19:1-10. His encounter with Jesus brought radical transformation. His eyes were opened to see others beyond himself. His hands, once used for taking, began to give. His conscience was awakened. His heart became compassionate. He openly confessed and made restitution. Above all, his soul was transformed, and Jesus became his Lord. True Gospel always produces visible, inward and outward change.

2. The Gospel leads us through a process

The Christian life is not an event but a journey. 1 Corinthians 13 highlights three abiding realities: faith, love, and hope. Faith turns us toward the Lord. Love moves us to serve others. Hope enables us to wait for the return of our Saviour. The Gospel shapes us continuously through this divine process, aligning our lives with God’s purposes.

3. The Gospel brings progressive blessings

Psalm 103:3-6 beautifully outlines the blessings that flow from God’s work in our lives. He forgives our sins, which is a spiritual blessing. He heals diseases, touching our physical lives. He redeems us from destruction, restoring our social standing. He crowns us with love and compassion, shaping our moral life. He satisfies our desires, bringing emotional and psychological wholeness. God’s blessings through the Gospel are holistic and progressive, touching every dimension of our being.

4. The Gospel produces evident transformation

In John 3, Jesus speaks to Nicodemus about the necessity of being born again. True encounter with the Gospel cannot leave a person unchanged. If there is no transformation, something is lacking in our understanding or experience. Jesus used simple illustrations to explain deep spiritual truths, making it clear that new birth results in a new life.

5. The Gospel was purchased at a great price

The Gospel is not cheap. It cost the life of Jesus Christ. In John 17, we see His submission to the Father’s will, knowing the sacrifice He was about to make. Through His death and resurrection, grace flows to us. We receive forgiveness, reconciliation, and eternal life, not because of our merit, but because of His sacrifice. This grace calls for a response, to hold firmly to faith and live in gratitude and obedience.

The true Gospel is not centered on human effort, emotion, or achievement. It is centered on Christ alone. It transforms lives, leads us in a divine process, blesses us progressively, produces visible change, and was secured through the highest price.

Therefore, let us hold fast to this Gospel. Let our lives reflect its power. And above all, let everything we say and do bring glory to the name of Jesus Christ alone.
